11 AWESOME THINGS TO WATCH FOR IN 2016
The New Year just arrived and we can only hope for a better, healthier, and happier year than the last one because truth be told 2015 was pretty shitty. However, as the optimistic and naturally happy folks we are, we can’t help but be full of hope for 2016. So what are some of the biggest events, technologies and trends, films and TV series that will rock our world this year? Soon enough you’ll know all about them and probably become obsessed with them as usually happens with new fads and inventions. Happy New Year, and keep in mind that TCmag’s design and format are about to change soon for the better! So stay tuned. You won’t regret it! Written by Theodoros II
WE ARE TAKING OVER MARS . . . WELL, KIND OF!
The so-called ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) is a collaborative project between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) to send an atmosphere research orbiter and demonstration lander to Mars in 2016 as part of the larger European-led ExoMars mission. The mission will follow with a lander and Mars Rover in 2018 in which the 2016 launched TGO spacecraft will also operate as a communication link with earth and the rover. In October 2016 the trace gas orbiter is expected to deliver the ExoMars EDM Schiaparelli lander and then proceed with atmospheric mapping. As you probably understand by now, our next goal is to put a human on the red planet.
THE SUMMER OLYMPICS IN BRAZIL
Yep, 2016 is an Olympic year and for us sports fanatics this is a good enough reason to be happy. However, if you don’t give a shit about sports you can still be happy about it since the Summer Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, which is full of amazing women with the most incredible butts in the world. So if you haven’t planned your summer vacation yet, you know where to go.
THE X-FILES RETURNS
It’s been over thirteen years since the most amazing sci-fi TV series ended. The X-Files is for me what the Bible is for a super religious Christian. It was the TV series that blazed the path for other awesome sci-fi shows such as Lost and Heroes, just to mention a couple. But worry not because agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are ready to pick up where they left off, investigating government cover-ups, alien conspiracies, and the paranormal in a six-part miniseries that premieres January 24 on Fox. I can’t wait!
VIRTUAL REALITY WILL BECOME MAINSTREAM
If you’re into high-tech gadgets and a geek like me who can’t help but love every new invention that hits the market, then you’re in for a very exciting 2016. After being dominated for decades by gamers, entertainment culture is poised to become ruled by virtual reality as it goes mainstream this year with the release of four powerful, affordable, and impressive headsets: HTC’s Vive, Sony’s PlayStation VR, HoloLens by Microsoft, and the long-awaited Oculus Rift, owned by Facebook. How will these four change our lives exactly? Soon we will get all the answers we need . . . I hope.
THE 88th ACADEMY AWARDS
The Oscars will take place on February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, and all the Leonardo DiCaprio fans out there (including me) are hoping our favorite actor will be nominated and win the award for Best Actor since his performance as the ultimate badass Hugh Glass in The Revenant is phenomenal.
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO v. TYSON FURY REMATCH
In November, Klitschko lost for the first time in more than eleven years and with this loss he saw his heavyweight title change hands. The fight was extremely boring since the champ looked old and scared to trade punches with Tyson Fury, who danced his way to victory. Sometime during 2016 the anticipated rematch is expected to take place and hopefully this time Klitschko will let his hands go and knock the loudmouth Brit out.
JUNO WILL “TELL” US ALL WE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT JUPITER
For those who might not know, the Juno spacecraft is on a NASA New Frontiers mission to Jupiter. Juno was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5, 2011, and will arrive on July 4, 2016. The spacecraft is to be placed in a polar orbit to study Jupiter’s composition, gravity field, magnetic field, and polar magnetosphere. Juno will also search for clues about how the planet formed, including whether it has a rocky core, the amount of water present within the deep atmosphere, how its mass is distributed, and about its deep winds, which can reach speeds of 618 kilometers per hour (384 mph). I don’t know about you but the geeks all over the world can’t wait.
WESTWORLD: THE REMAKE
If you’ve seen the original 1973 film with the one and only Yul Brynner as Gunslinger then you know well that Arnie as the Terminator wasn’t the first evil humanoid robot to kick ass, just the most popular one. The good news is that J. J. Abrams will executive-produce this HBO series based on the movie. The original, written and directed by Michael Crichton, told the story of an Old West–themed amusement park with robotic cowboys that starts to go very, very wrong when the robots rebel. Jonathan Nolan, brother of Christopher and cowriter of many of his movies, will direct the first episode.
THE FIRST ‘’SPACE HOTEL” IN HISTORY WILL BE UNVEILED IN RUSSIA
A Russian company (Orbital Technologies) has unveiled an ambitious plan to launch a “cosmic hotel” for wealthy space tourists in 2016. The hotel is expected to be very comfortable, and it will be possible to look at the Earth through large portholes. Well, we definitely aren’t wealthy enough to stay at this hotel but we’re really curious to see how this thing plays out for the rich fellas.
The UEFA European Championship takes place every four years and is without a doubt the second biggest football event in the world (after the World Cup). This year it is scheduled to be held in France from June 10 to July 10, and we are curious to see whether Spain will continue to dominate (they won in 2008 and 2012) or if there will be another huge upset like the miracle of Greece’s win in 2004.
BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN of JUSTICE & X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
On one hand, we will witness the most epic fantasy clash (fantasy until March when the film is released, after which it will become part of pop culture) between the two most famous superheroes ever and for the fanatics the battle doesn’t end there but continues between Kal-El and Bruce Wayne, Marvel and DC Comics (I am such a geek, I know). On the other hand, and although we don’t know what’s really going on with the X-Men timelines anymore, whoever is familiar with X-men comics knows that Apocalypse (portrayed by The Force Awakens’ Oscar Isaac, in a whole lot of purple makeup) is the most powerful mutant and one of the baddest villains in the history of comic books, so that’s good enough for us to go see the film and root for who else? The bad guy, of course.
