11 LITTLE BUT GREAT THINGS THAT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU TODAY
A recent poll in the US showed that people have become really greedy, megalomaniac and always expect the best (in financial terms) thing to happen to them because for some reason they deserve it. Not that we didn’t know all this or that this phenomenon is only a sign of our times since being filthy rich has always being the ultimate desire and dream for most people.
So for this week’s list we picked 11 little but great things not revolving around money (or sex) that can happen to you during an ordinary day and make you realize how blessed you are for just breathing and enjoy this vain but beautiful life
11. WHEN YOUR BOSS LEAVES EARLY THE OFFICE
There’s a saying “when the cat's away the mice will play” and we should all agree that this case when the boss leaves early and let you be in charge of the office or store or whatever kind of business you are working in. Especially if your working environment offers high technology such as free Internet, television or radio then you might even have a little party before you even know it. However, if you don’t have any of the aforementioned electronic devices available while working, we bet you own a cell phone for such cases and talk anything but work with your buddies or family or love partner.
10. GETTING BOTH ARMRESTS AT CINEMA
This is one of the main reasons why I never attend premieres anymore and usually I will be waiting a month or two before I visit my favorite Cineplex movie theatre and enjoy the film like a true king: popcorn or nachos with melt cheese (depending the mood every time), the XXL size of Sprite and most importantly marking my territory and owning both armrests since there are no more than 5 or 10 fans in the dark movie theater. You have no idea what a big relief is not having a sweaty arm on yours or someone breathing on your neck for 120 minutes.
Important Note: Even if it’s a month or two after the film opened, make sure you go on a Monday or Wednesday afternoon, because you never know.
9. FINDING THE LAST ITEM (YOU WANTED) IN YOUR SIZE
Lately, I don’t have any particular success on the specific department but I can still remember (imagine that this was back in the late 90s) the excitement and joy I felt finding the last pair of the Converse All Star sneakers I had been searching for a really long time. I was happy for the rest of the week, not to say month, and I wore the specific pair for at least 4 years straight before they get totally ripped and me heartbroken.
8. GREEN LIGHTS (IN A ROW) WHILE RUSHING
To be honest that’s one of the most awesome little things that can happen to you during an ordinary day even if you don’t rush, but of course when this occurs while rushing, especially if there’s a great purpose behind it, such as not ending up peeing your pants (you all know what I am saying here), then the significance of this little random incident can become epic and leave its mark as the day you will always remember as “The day I almost peed my pants while driving my car.”
7. RENT THE LAST COPY OF THE FILM AT THE VIDEO STORE
Alright, alright, some of you now might say “Dude who the heck still goes to the video store for movies when there’s a thing called free downloading online?” but you got to either accept the fact that out there are some hopelessly romantic fools who still follow a 90’s lifestyle. But even if that’s not the case anymore for most nowadays, who doesn’t remember the feeling back in the day when this happened? I sure do remember looking for Léon: The Professional for six weeks straight before I finally find the last sole copy staring at me. The fact I had to almost beat another guy to get it because we got there at the same time is a story I will probably have to share on another list with title “11 things you would almost killed for”
6. PEOPLE COMPLIMENTING YOUR LOOKS
Let’s make clear here that by people it can be anyone: your mom, your lover, your siblings, your friends, your co-workers or just random people. It doesn’t matter where it comes from as long as it’s genuine and honest. Again this is not to be misunderstood with vanity or superficial people who are exclusively into their looks or materialistic things, but the good feeling you get inside when someone who doesn’t expect any kind of exchange back is being so “generous” with you and makes your day without costing your or him/her a thing.
5. WHEN SOMEBODY HOLDS THE DOOR OPEN FOR YOU
It doesn’t matter if it’s a door at school, your work, the elevator or a car’s door what matters here is the kind action and the fact some people are still kind and caring enough to do something so little but so sweet for someone they might not even know. The beauty of the specific act is that even if that doesn’t or rarely happens to you, you can always do it first for others and make someone’s day either that’s a beautiful lady, an older person or even another man. All we need is love.
4. TAX RETURN DAY
This is probably the only entry in this list revolving around money but it has nothing to do with greediness or the desire of someone to be filthy rich. It’s all about the feeling we get to experience once we see a few hundreds or even thousands of our hard-working bucks returned from the big “pimp” also known as government. Who doesn’t love a few extra cash that he considered “lost” money so he can use to spoil himself and the people around him?
3. THE THING YOU WERE GOING TO BUY IS ALREADY ON SALE
This is one of the most pleasant surprises that can happen to you during shopping, especially if you have been determined to buy a specific thing and shaved money for that purpose. Once again the last time this happened to me was in a previous decade and more specifically back in 2008 when I got PS3 for 200 Euros instead of 350 because Sony was celebrating for some reason and was being generous. What about you? I’ll be reading the comments to see if there are similar experiences.
2. A DELICIOUS MEAL
This entry is another proof how in our privileged societies of the modern Western world we take some truly important things for granted, even though in other parts of the world, such as Africa and India for example, are considered a luxury.
Nothing compares with a nice meal, especially if it’s cooked with love from your mom or partner after a long tiring day. It usually calms you down and gives you a feeling of satisfaction that takes away your problems for a little while and comforts you in a unique, almost magical way.
Thank you mama for all the nice meals you ever cooked for me showing me your love in the most simple but beautiful way.
1. FALLING IN LOVE
Alright, alright, falling in love isn’t a little thing by any means and no matter how you look at it being in love is one of the greatest things that can happen to anyone. On the other hand however, in the super materialistic era we live today it seems like consumerism, money and sex are three of the most “important” standards the vast majority of the people sadly evaluate happiness and success. So in our times falling in love has lost its magic and power in the “social rankings” set mostly by the media and pop culture but fortunately will always be an eternal standard of happiness for all the romantic “artists of love” out there, and who knows today might be your lucky day and meet true love.
